The 20-year-old, already being tipped to become a future England worldwide, joined Celtic on an 18-month loan deal in 2016, and has had another outstanding season with the Hoops which has resulted in his second Scottish league title with the club in two years.

Brendan Rodgers revealed he would be open to keeping Manchester City loanee Patrick Roberts at Celtic next season.

The Perth side were made to pay for that miss two minutes into the second half when Roberts, after taking a Johnston pass, nearly casually curled a shot from 25 yards into the far corner of the net.

Both the Parkhead club and the SFA released statements on the controversy, which will see fewer Celtic supporters in the ground than Aberdeen fans if the Dons are able to sell all their briefs.

"I think he's a player (Roberts) that of course we'd love to have here, but we have to respect he's still a Manchester City player", said boss Rodgers. "If the possibility ever came up, then of course it's something I'd look at".

He also scored against his parent club in the Champions League in December, making City fans take notice of his abilities.

"However, these positive suggestions have not been accepted and this will mean a number of our supporters who have supported the tournament and indeed attended matches in the earlier rounds including the semi-final will miss out on the Cup Final as a result of this reduction".

"It's astonishing I would only hope they will look at it".

He said: "With young players it's just about timing".

"I want to ensure they go in with other good players at the right time and put them in against a team that's a test".

"Maybe them running away with it with such ease really isn't great for the league in general but in terms of our targets, I am glad that game's out of the way and there are three we can concentrate on to hopefully get enough points to get European football".

"That's where the pressure is going to be next season".
