It found strong evidence that drinking the equivalent of a small glass of wine or beer a day (about 10 grammes alcohol content) increases pre-menopausal breast cancer risk by five percent and post-menopausal breast cancer risk by nine percent. However, this new major study has found that drinking only half a glass of wine can actually increase the risk of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the USA, with over 252,000 new cases estimated this year.

The comprehensive new report analyzed 199 global studies, which consisted of over 12 million women and over 260,000 cases of breast cancer-so it's pretty legit.

Consuming foods high in carotenoids - such as carrots, tomatoes, apricots, spinach and sweet potatoes - was linked to a lower risk, as were dairy foods and others high in calcium. Gentler activity, such as walking or gardening, reduces the risk of developing the disease at any age by 13 per cent. They said the "mechanisms underlying" this relationship are "complex and not well-defined".

Breast cancer is the No. 2 cancer killer of US women, after lung cancer. The same exercises can lead to a 10 percent decreased risk in postmenopausal women. "There is no evidence that we can balance risks that way; it's not something we have control over".

The new report provided stronger evidence that moderate exercise can decrease the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer - the most common type of breast cancer.

Moreover, women who are overweight or obese, and those with greater adult weight gain, were found to be at greater risk of developing breast cancer after menopause, according to the findings.

The current official government recommendations for both men and women are to drink no more than 14 units per week, and spread them across at least three days.

Mothers who breastfeed are at lower risk for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. The report also left out genetics, he said.

McTiernan does recommend women who choose to drink alcohol consume no more than one drink on average once a day, in line with the federal government's dietary guidelines.

"People have a right to know about the risks associated with alcohol, which is why the AHA is calling for specific health warnings on alcohol labels and sustained, government-backed campaigns warning people of the risks".

The number goes up to 9 percent for postmenopausal women.

Women anxious about their risk of breast cancer should drink less and exercise more, global cancer experts recommended Tuesday. More fat cells mean more estrogen, which is known to boost the risk for postmenopausal breast cancer.

Another recent study, this one from the University of Missouri-Columbia, found that a natural compound called luteolin may help reduce the risk of triple-negative breast cancers spreading.
