Hardy is no stranger to taking on the role of an infamous villain as he played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises back in 2012.

Sony has ensnared a star and director for its Spider-Man offshoot, Venom. So you can probably forget about the version of Venom portrayed by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3".

Apparently, Hardy is a big fan of the character and even posed for a photo wearing a Venom T-shirt.

The project is one of Sony's top priorities and the studio is not wasting time as the movie is set to open October 5, 2018. We've also heard that it will have no connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and therefore, no connection to Tom Holland's new Spider-Man. As it has now been revealed that the film will be directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer, and will star none other than Dunkirk's Tom Hardy!

In March previous year, Sony announced that they would be creating a standalone film for Venom, a popular villain in Marvel's Spider-Man universe.

According to THR, Hardy is in final negotiations to play Venom. The character derives his powers - and his villainous streak - from a living, symbiotic alien that takes the form of a black costume, imbuing its host with abilities similar to Spider-Man's. The studio's next project, Spider-Man: Homecoming, will be released as a joint project between Marvel Studios and Sony.

So how do you make a movie about one of Spider-Man's greatest villains - a character whose very existence is predicated on an interaction with the hero - without actually using Spider-Man?

'Venom', the solo film for one of Spider-Man's iconic villains, is beginning to pick up some steam.

This is obviously a major get for Sony, which views Venom as the kickoff to a major web of interconnected movies.
