Andre Ward proved to the world that he is not only the best light heavyweight in the world, but also the No.1 pound-for-pound boxer when he stopped rival Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round in Las Vegas. Ward throws a big right hand, and looks to fight on the inside. Ward a right then a left.

Ward's assault didn't slow down until he had Kovalev pinned against the ropes and as he bent over from the succession of punches, the referee had no choice but to stop the fight at 2:29 of the eighth round.

"I knew that this fight was going to be different", Ward said. I was ready for all 12 rounds and I don't respect the decision.

After seven rounds, judge Steve Weisfeld had Kovalev ahead 68-65 while judges Glenn Feldman and Dave Moretti had Ward ahead 67-66.

This scribe had Kovalev winning the first three and losing the next four. "He's been on top for a long time", Ward said.

"Championship fights start in second half, in the sixth round".

"I will finish [Ward's] boxing career because like, right now, I'm already in a corner and I don't have like another way except like get a victory over him, it's a necessary victory". It was a controversial decision after Ward come back from a second-round knockdown to get the decision. "Can I get back on the pound-for-pound list now?" he said. Let me just keep doing me and that's really the best place to be as an athlete. All I got to do is be myself and that will be enough.

Kovalev seemed in shock after the fight.

"Championship fights don't start until l the sixth round", Ward said. "Kovalev fought a good fight but once I compute a fighter in my brain and have him in there, I know what I need to do the next time around".

'Only a low blow (hurt me),' he added, before watching video of the end of the fight and observing: 'Low blow - and I felt this. "He was hitting him low the whole fight". I'm just going to leave it at that.

'I'm going to take it as I get it - it's a unsafe sport man, ' Ward told Sky Sports.

"If there are questions marks after this, that has nothing to do with me", he said. "The first was Chad Dawson [in 2012], and the second was tonight". "I knew he was hurt, trying to cover up. Now we have quieted all those who were whining and thought we didn't get it the first time". The two had stood together after 12 rounds on November 19, standing on each side of referee Robert Byrd. The bout pitted not only two of the very best light heavyweights against each other, but two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world against each other.

In the first round, Kovalev, a 34-year-old native of Russian Federation, aggressively took the center of the ring while Ward alternated between traveling to his left or traveling to his right. Kovalev ditched his former conditioning coach and hired Alexandr Mikahilovich, who had worked with Russian biathlon athletes. The seventh round was close early but Kovalev's breathing became noticeably strained and Ward wasted no time taking advantage of the Kovalev's exhaustion.

When asked, in the aftermath of his victory over Kovalev, whether a bout with Joshua could be arranged, Ward replied: 'Anything is possible.

Las Vegas is a sea of mops and buckets, rushed into action to erase the stain left behind by the Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor Punch and Judy show. "Krusher" covered up and slumped over, but two more punches came from Ward and they both were on the border. You just lace it up, do it again and we'll see what happens. "He's a great fighter", Ward said.
