A suspect has been arrested in the killing of a 33-year-old Australian tourist who was beaten to death just outside a hotel in San Francisco's Polk Gulch neighborhood, authorities said Saturday.

There were no weapons involved, according to local news outlet KRON4, and police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

His identity was disclosed after the San Francisco Medical Examiner formally identified him.

He was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.

"One arrest has been made in the homicide case", San Francisco Police Department officer Giselle Talkoff told AAP. He was an analytical chemist with SGS Australia, which offers a range of testing and certification services to businesses.

Andrew Borden, of Wisconsin, was also a guest at the hotel early Friday.

Police have not released the suspect's name or any other information about the person.
