UFC president Dana White told ESPN that Hughes was airlifted to a hospital but did not specify where the incident took place.

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes was airlifted to medical treatment from the site of an accident on Friday after his truck collided with a train in IL.

Authorities said Hughes was airlifted to a Springfield hospital via Arch Air Medical Services.

Police say the pickup was traveling on a road in central Illinois Friday when the driver crossed railroad tracks marked with a warning. The truck was struck on the passenger side by the train.

The crash occurred at 10:45 a.m. on Beelers Trail, according to the Illinois State Police.

Hughes is recognized as one of the greatest welterweights in mixed martial arts history.

Hughes, a high school state wrestling champion at Hillsboro, won his first UFC World Welterweight title in 2001.

Hughes registered a further 17 victories in the promotion, including wins over fellow Hall of Famer B.J. and future inductee Georges St-Pierre.

CBS Sports will update this story when more details are available.
