"Obviously the scores are low but it's still the U.S. Open".

However, neither Thomas and Fowler aren't the leader heading into Sunday's final round.

Regardless of the sea of red on the leaderboard, it is indeed the U.S. Open, and young Justin Thomas is about to find out what that truly means.

Champ and Scottie Scheffler are tied at 1 under.

Scheffler plays for the University of Texas, and Champ plays for Texas A&M.

The Englishman had a chance for a piece of the third-round lead at the U.S. Open on Saturday as he lined up his third shot on the par-5 final hole - a 50-yard wedge from the bottom of the hill that led to the green.

Justin Thomas is congratulated by his caddie after an eagle on 18 gave him a 9-under 63.

The 26-year-old needed to birdie the 18th to equal the lowest score in relation to par in US Open history, but missed from five feet. We've got a leaderboard jammed with players all hungry for their first major title.

Hoffman birdied five of his first eight holes to get to 9 under, one shot clear of a massive logjam in second. His 1-over-73 left him in a tie for 51st at 2 over through 54 holes.

Patrick Reed has joined the 65 club at Erin Hills. That shot hit halfway up and trickled back down the hill.

Harman was on top at 12 under coming into the day.

Scheffler is three shots back of the lead on a jam-packed leaderboard. And then he made birdie on the next hole.

Three pars later, it was all over.

The U.S. Open didn't seem to faze him, and he delivered a variety of big shots. Then again, Spieth has always said Ellie is the funniest member of the family. - Leader Brian Harman reflects on unusual scoring conditions this week. His only birdies came on the front nine, on Nos. It features a silhouette of Palmer in mid-stride, tossing his visor in the air. Former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson shot a 71, though he was still seven shots behind.

Casey, Koepka, Harman and Fleetwood have yet to tee off.

Thomas became the fifth player to shoot 63 in the U.S. Open, and the first with a score of 9 under.

After making par on his first nine holes, Niebrugge bogeyed Nos. He two-putted for birdie, and he rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th.

A whopping eight players are at 6 under, including world No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama and Louis Oosthuizen.

"I've been striking the ball well". And if that's not enough of a traffic jam at the top, 18 players are separated by three shots to start the third round.

The wind is gusting up to 25 miles per hour with the forecast calling for it to go as high as 30 miles per hour in the afternoon when the leaders tee off.

Nearly an inch of rain fell on the course overnight and Reed, who beat Rory McIlroy in the opening singles at Hazeltine a year ago, was one of many players to take advantage in pursuit of his first major title.

Spieth's day at the course likely isn't done.
