A ridge of high pressure centered over Southern California is to blame, said Will Pi, a meteorologist with the weather service. Additionally, a heat advisory is in effect for the Pomona area, San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita Valley from Monday to Tuesday, and for the San Gabriel Valley for Tuesday.

June is historically hot in the Valley, but with temperatures expected to hit anywhere between 118 and 120 degrees early next week, even the National Weather Service says that kind of heat is unusual.

A Heat Advisory is in effect through Saturday for the valley, while a Excessive Heat Warning goes into effect Sunday through Tuesday.

NorCal residents are advised to drink lots of water, wear light-colored clothing and avoid strenuous activities between 10 a.m. -6 p.m.

"The general rule of thumb for this the advisory is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 100-degrees or higher for at least two days, and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75-degrees", NWS officials explained on their governmental website, http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/heat/ww.shtml.

Notorious hot spot Death Valley, home to the world's all-time hottest temperature of 134 degrees, will soar to 123 degrees by Sunday. People with heat sensitivities should take steps to protect themselves.

Phoenix will also be within reach of tying the record for consecutive days of high temperatures greater than 115 degrees, which is four days set in 1990.

As hot as it's expected to be, Pi said he does not believe any heat records to fall over the next five or so days.

Californias Heat Illness Prevention Standard requires employers to train workers on the signs and symptoms of heat illness, provide shade when temperatures exceed 80 degrees, develop emergency response procedures and train workers on how to execute those procedures when necessary.
