JB Holmes one shot off US Open lead heading into weekend

Clarence Duncan | 20 June, 2017, 01:44

"You don't get many rounds at the U.S. Open that are stress-free", Fowler said. His 7-under par tied the record to par for the first round of a U.S. Open held by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf, who each shot 7-under 63 at Baltusrol in 1980.

And they had even more company.

Casey posted a one-under 71 to move to seven under, while Fleetwood and Americans Brian Harman and Brooks Koepka signed for 70s at Erin Hills.

"I hit the ball better than I did yesterday, I drove it very well and hit a lot of good iron shots, I just didn't make any putts", Johnson said.

There were 18 rounds in the 60s, starting with one for the record book.

Thomas finished in style, and it had nothing to do with his hot pink trousers. "And I just unfortunately didn't execute". After another week, it's the WGC-Bridgestone and PGA Championship.

"The finish was awesome".

"My best friend has caddied for me for six or seven years", said Champ. "I'd love to have another one of those", Thomas said.

"I am a pretty happy man". "And I showed what I can do".

And he still has a long way to go.

No such concern for Andrew "Beef" Johnston who booked his place for the weekend and thanks, in part, to four hand-delivered peanut and jelly sandwiches on route to 73 to be inside the top-30 at two-under par.

Big hitters Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day were expected to thrive on the wide open fairways of Erin Hills.

But the Englishman recovered magnificently with five straight birdies from the 17th, and a 71 left him sharing the lead. "(It's tough to get through) a U.S. Open or any major without some kind of hiccup".

After watching seemingly everyone else pass him by on the leaderboard, including his great friend Justin Thomas, Fowler birdied three straight holes on the back nine to finish at 10 under.

"It's going to be a really cool day for someone tomorrow", the world number nine said. And it's especially hard to win a first major when you're the rabbit, setting the pace for the opening two days.

"As good as I got", he told Spieth, smiling as he walked with him down the fairway.

He was at 7-under 137, two shots clear of anyone else who played early in warm sunshine on a course that getting dry and crispy.

In all, 32 players are within five shots of the lead. There no longer is a 10-shot rule that would allow anyone within 10 shots of the lead to make the cut.

Even with the course drying out, there simply was not enough wind to frighten anyone on their game.

Washington County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said the deceased was a 94-year old male who appeared to have died of natural causes. He made an eagle on his final hole at the Sony Open in January to shoot 59, and he went on to break the PGA TOUR's 72-hole scoring record.

Of the top 10 players in the world, only Masters champion Sergio Garcia (70) and Fowler broke par.

A 338-yard drive off the tee took him to the edge of the green and he got up and down in two for a birdie.

He three-putted on No. 13.

"It doesn't matter how long, how whatever the course is", Thomas said about the longest course in major championship history. If I can make four birdies around here, that would be pretty good. "I'm not too concerned about it you know they found out about it right away and let everybody know".

But the work is not done. The 23-year-old Californian, whose mother is Taiwanese and father is German and French, had a pair of birdies on the day and shot 73 for a five-under total.
