The ongoing diplomatic row between the United States and North Korea hit a new low point on Sunday after North Korea accused the USA of being "a felonious and lawless gangster state".

North Korea has accused USA officials of "literally mugging" its diplomats at New York's Kennedy International Airport before making off with a diplomatic package.

The rogue nation threatened unspecified "grave consequences" if the U.S. failed to provide "a good explanation of its act of infringement upon the sovereignty of the DPRK and an official apology on behalf of the USA government".

A foreign ministry spokesperson speaking through KCNA called the USA a "felonious and lawless gangster state".

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the North Korean officials protested strongly and USA officials asked them to board the flight, saying the package would be handed over to them later. "The global community needs to seriously reconsider whether or not NY, where such an outrageous mugging is rampant, is fit to serve as the venue for worldwide meetings".

Amid a war of words between Pyongyang and the White House, North Korea has escalated its missile program as it looks to make good on its vow to produce a weapon capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. The report adds that the package was confiscated by a group of agents from the United States Department of Homeland Security when the North Korean diplomats were making their way onto an aircraft bound for Pyongyang, the capital city of the country.

A North Korean spokesperson said a delegate "was literally mugged" at JFK on Friday while trying to return home from a United Nations conference.

The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions against North Korea for the reclusive state's nuclear and ballistic missile activities.

A United Nations -based official familiar with the situation said that the incident happened when the North Korean officials were waiting at the gate for their flight after completing check-in.

This newest diplomatic row between the US and North Korea comes at the same the Koreans released Otto F. Warmbier, an American college student who was in the country for 17 months in captivity.

Mr Warmbier was in a coma, showed no understanding of language, and had extensive brain tissue loss.
