The game was a blowout with the Democratic team winning 11-2. "We've had a very, very divided country for many years".

He's also saluting the Capitol police officers injured in the attack on a Republican Congressional baseball practice.

The game is underway at Nationals Stadium on what seemed to be a warm but breezy day, where the crowd gave a standing ovation for Rep. Steve Scalise.

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, sent a video message that played at the start of the game.

They said that his "risk of death" has substantially lowered than when he arrived at the hospital. But despite the unifying nature of the event, there were boos for the president, too, from the section for Democratic fans on the third base side.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi both talked about the need for unity after the shooting.

Mr Scalise was among five people wounded in the shooting.

The man who shot Scalise and others at the baseball practice had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers, according to a person familiar with the case. They chanted "U-S-A! U-S-A" when the prayer was over.

"He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding", the statement said. They are going to all wear LSU hats in honor of Steve and I think that's a wonderful thing. "That was humbling in a way".

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that would happen, or when Scalise, 51, would be able to leave the hospital. "And so I'm excited that we made a decision to do that", Texas Rep. Roger Williams, who sustained what he described as "an ankle/leg injury" while diving for cover during the shooting, told reporters Wednesday afternoon. Michigan Rep. Fred Upton tweeted Thursday that friends of the wounded lobbyist Matt Mika will be giving out small white ribbons in support of Mika and all those affected by the attack.

There was plenty of amateur-hour baseball in the event, but also some breakout play. That lasted until the end of the seven-inning game.

Congress is a contentious place, and the battles between Republicans and Democrats have never been more fierce than in the eight years under President Barack Obama and the early days of Trump's presidency.

The crowd was a mix of Democrats and Republicans.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday, adding he also visited the wounded Capitol Police officer at the hospital. Still, the divide was good-natured, for once.

Congressional members decided Wednesday that the game would be played Thursday as scheduled, with one change.

The charities are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

A budget increase for the US Capitol Police from just under $400 million this year is among the ideas under consideration.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

He said the Republican whip spent much of the last year ribbing him about the Democrats' loss the previous year, and he was looking forward to the chance to turn the tables.

For the record, the series is tied at 39 wins for each party, plus a tie in 1983.
