United States shoots down Syrian Air Force fighter

U.S. Navy fighter jet shot down a Syrian government warplane after it attacked Washington-backed fighters near ISIS' de facto capital of Raqqa, the U.S. -led coalition said Sunday.

"In accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defense of Coalition partnered forces, [the Syrian SU-22] was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet", the news release said.

An initial attack by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad occurred at 4:30 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. ET), causing an unknown number of casualties and driving out SDF fighters, the coalition said in a statement.

The Syrian Armed Forces, meanwhile, said that one of its warplanes was attacked in the Raqqa countryside, "while it was carrying out a combatant mission against ISIS terrorist organization".

The coalition confirmed that a U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet shot down a Syrian Su-22 that had dropped bombs near SDF positions.

A statement distributed by the Syrian military and distributed on Twitter said that the aircraft's lone pilot was killed in the attack. Iran-backed Shiite militias, along with other pro-Syrian government forces have steadily advanced around Tanf despite repeated warnings from the US military. The shootdown was near the Syrian town of Tabqa.

US forces tangled earlier this month with Syria-allied aircraft in the region.

A USA fighter jet has shot down a Syrian government plane in Syria's Raqqa province, officials from both sides have said.

"The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria".

This is the latest example of tension between the Russian-backed Syrian regime and US -led coalition forces, who are partnering with Arab and Kurdish forces to destroy ISIS.
