"The death of Abdul Rahman deals yet another blow to the senior leadership of ISIS-K", said General John Nicholson, the senior USA commander in Afghanistan.

Afghan officials today confirmed that United States airstrikes targeted and killed at least 16 civilians, mostly women, and children, in the eastern Nangarhar Province, targeting the civilians as they tried to flee out of an ISIS-held district where heavy fighting has been ongoing. "He found out just like those before him that there are no safe havens in Afghanistan".

The United States military has deployed Special Forces and airstrikes against Islamic State group militants in Afghanistan and said it has killed dozens of the group's leaders and hundreds of fighters this year.

Though U.S. and Afghan forces have scored several battlefield successes against the group, ISIS-K has continued to carry out bloody attacks around Afghanistan, including in the country's capital of Kabul, where the militants have attacked a large military hospital and the Iraqi embassy. American and Afghan military forces have promised to eliminate IS in Afghanistan in 2017.

'The death of Abdul Rahman deals yet another blow to the senior leadership of ISIS-K, ' said General John Nicholson, the senior U.S. commander in Afghanistan.

Last month a U.S. air strike killed 16 policemen in Helmand province.

Based in southern parts of eastern Nangarhar province, IS's Khorasan Province branch (ISIS-K) emerged in early 2015 in the mountainous areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan to cover Afghanistan, Pakistan and "other nearby territories". The previous attack targeted a prayer ceremony, and the US similarly claimed that the praying civilians were "ISIS members".

IS in Afghanistan has primarily been active in several districts of eastern Nangarhar province.

No one knows who fired the mortars, the villagers said.
