"Three militants were killed today in a gunfight with police and army in Tral", a police spokesman said, adding "the operation is underway in the area".

He added that the search operation was still on and there were chances that another terrorist was still in the area.

Since Aug. 1, according to police records, 11 suspected militants and two Indian soldiers were killed in alleged gunfights in the region.

Police said two AK 47 rifles and a pistol were recovered from the encounter site. He said that the slain militants were part of Zakir Musa group.

Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, said to be headed by Kashmiri militant Zakir Musa, broke away from Hizbul Mujahideen earlier this year, saying its members would fight "only for Islam and establishing Sharia rule, and not for nationalism or Pakistan'".

Police said one of the slain militant Ishaq was involved in thrashing and torturing of some SPOs on gunpoint and circulated the same on social media.

As the fighting raged, anti-India protests erupted in Tral, leading to clashes between rock-throwing residents and government forces who fired shotgun pellets and tear gas.
