Since the state passed legislation to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries, towns, cities, and counties have had the option to allow them under state guidelines or ban them.

The introduction of new competition plans to help more and more New Yorkers afford medical marijuana. Locations weren't disclosed immediately in large part because some companies were looking to finalizing sites after the state decided on licenses.

As Fiorella co-CEO Eric Sirota told reporters, "what distinguishes us from the other companies in the market is that all of our facilities will be located in medical buildings, in academic medical settings".

The fifth new registered organization, NYC-based cannabis oil specialist Citiva Medical, will steer clear of Long Island, manufacturing in Orange County and operating dispensing facilities in Dutchess, Chemung, Kings and Richmond counties.

The New York State Department of Health announced Tuesday it added five new registered organizations to make and dispense marijuana.

"The New York State Department of Health is committed to growing the state's Medical Marijuana Program responsibly", said New York State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker.

Citiva Medical and Valley Agriceuticals will manufacture in Orange County.

Medical marijuana is about to see major growth in NY.

The Department of Health says there are now more than 25,000 certified patients and over 1,000 registered practitioners in the program.

Since March, there has been a 72 percent increase in certified patients. The lone exception is New York Canna, which will have its manufacturing facility in Onondaga County. Patients with certain health conditions, including AIDS, cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, may be eligible to receive medical marijuana.

PalliaTech NY, which will manufacture in Ulster County and operate dispensaries in Nassau, Orange and Queens counties and the Plattsburgh area. The company's dispensaries will be in Erie, Orange, Queens and Suffolk counties.

Four of these sites will be located in Nassau County and Suffolk County on Long Island.
