An investigation was underway Sunday after an 8-year-old girl fell from the deck of a Carnival Cruise Line ship docked in Miami, the cruise line said.

The child fell down about 8:15 AM when the Carnival Cruise Lines ship Carnival Glory finished its voyage and the cruise ship docked at Port Miami, according to the police.

The exact distance the girl fell is not yet clear, but it could have been between 25 and 50 feet, Miami Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.

Firefighters performed CPR on the girl, who has not yet been identified, in a desperate bid to save her life.

"The ship's medical team responded immediately and the child was transported to the ship's medical center", Carnival Cruise Lines spokeswoman Jayme Eglin said in an email.

ABC News reports that paramedics later provided first aid to the girl before taking her to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she initially was in critical condition. The ship's command immediately contacted Miami-Dade Police Department which is on site.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

Carnival Cruise Line said they did all they could to help the girl after the fall.

A statement from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines, a subsidiary of US-British Carnival Corporation & PLC, to 7News said: Our most heartfelt condolences are with the family at this very hard time.
