Air Force One touched down at McCarran International Airport as the Federal Bureau of Investigation was questioning the girlfriend of gunman Stephen Paddock for clues to what drove him to mass murder.

Paddock also used surveillance cameras to monitor police approaches to his room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino - including a camera he positioned in the peephole of the door.

Immigration documents show Marilou Danley had been overseas for weeks and was in the Philippines on Sunday when Paddock opened fire on a crowd, killing 59.

Danley's sisters in Australia said in a TV interview there that they believe she couldn't have known about Paddock's murderous plans, and that he must have sent her away so she wouldn't interfere.

Shortly afterwards she moved to the USA - this is where her history appears more complicated. But when a SWAT team stormed the room where Paddock had been staying since September 28, they found he had killed himself.

Workers at Stephen Paddock's local Starbucks immediately remembered the tall man with a big beer belly and bags under his eyes who used to come in with his girlfriend, according to the Los Angeles Times.

He said that Paddock "didn't seem like he was the type of guy to do that".

So far, investigators have found nothing to explain Paddock's actions, but were continuing to hunt and trace every possible clue about a gunman they described as a "psychopath".

Lombardo said he is "absolutely" confident authorities will find out what set off Paddock, a high-stakes gambler and retired accountant.

Investigators say that the shooting rampage was meticulously planned and included specially modified weapons.

Authorities previously disclosed that he had such "bump stock" devices with him at the hotel. "He loved her. He doted on her".

The guard was "very heroic" and provided police with information about the shooter's location, McMahill said.

The former Gold Coast woman, 62, had been living with Paddock in Mesquite, Nevada, before the shooting but was in the Philippines when the massacre occurred.

The investigation of a gunman who killed 59 people at a Las Vegas concert now shifts to his girlfriend, who has returned to the United States from the Philippines.

USA officials have reacted cautiously to a claim by the Islamic State jihadist group that the shooter had carried out Sunday night's massacre on its behalf.

Named as a "person of interest", Ms Danley allegedly received $100,000 (£75,400) from Paddock, who reportedly wired the money to her bank account in the Philippines days before the incident.

Her sisters in Australia have since told 7 News they believed he "sent her away" to the Philippines prior to the shooting.

A raid on the home they shared discovered 23 additional firearms, explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Investigators also learned Paddock accompanied Danley on a previous trip to her home country.
