Crews had not yet been able to contain a fire heading toward central Napa.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Director Ken Pimlott told the Associated Press that an expected 20,000 individuals in the northern piece of the state had been emptied.

Raging wildfires in northern California have destroyed at least 1,500 structures and forced the evacuation of 20,000 residents, officials said today.

Cal Fire says firefighters were battling a 200-acre fire in Napa County. The smaller Nuns Fire, in Sonoma, was at 5,000 acres by about midday, officials said.

The Santa Rosa Police Department said the blaze jumped Highway 101 Monday morning and ignited structures near a shopping area, prompting another neighborhood evacuation.

An emergency evacuation center was full at the Finley Community Center in west Santa Rosa, located at 2060 W. College Ave.

"If you live near Cardinal Newman High School or Larkfield, it is time to evacuate", read a message from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. "There was smoke all over the area".

Similar wildfires rages across the area in August 2015, when 12,000 residents were evacuated and 60,000 acres went up in flames, after drought conditions and winds left firefighters struggling to contain the outbreaks.

"Probably many homes and businesses, in the outskirts of Santa Rosa and the city itself", she said.
