A lawyer for Jaya TV charged officials of threatening the channel's staff to shut down transmission which he said was tantamount to "curbing the freedom of speech and expression".

A farmhouse belonging to Sasikala's nephew T.T.V. Dhinakaran near Puducherry was raided, as was former chief minister the late J. Jayalalithaa's Kodand estate.

The income tax department raided the premises of Jaya TV and Dr. Namadhu MGR, a Tamil newspaper, here this morning.

The raids by the I-T department could have a significant impact on Tamil Nadu politics, with the ruling AIADMK faction engaged in a bitter battle with rebel Dhinakaran and his supporters.

JayaHarini, the abode of sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran, is bustling with activity since Thursday morning as party cadres start gathering near the residence to show their solidarity. At least a dozen Officials began the process of raid at 6 am, at the office.

The Income Tax department also raided AIADMK Karnataka in-charge, Pugazhendi's house in Bengaluru's Domlur area. Searches are also being conducted at the college run by Mr.Dhivakaran and also at the residence of S. Kamaraj who was appointed Tiruvarur district Secretary of AIADMK (Amma) by T.T.V. Dinakaran, replacing Food Minister R. Kamaraj, recently. Soon after IT authorities arrived at his home in Adyar in high-class south Chennai, Dinakaran said the raids were politically launched. Raids are also being conducted in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi. We will not allow the party behind the raids to spread roots in Tamilnadu, ' he said.

Following the factional divide in the ruling AIADMK, Jaya TV has been critical of the government led by chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and deputy chief minister O. Panneerselvam.
