A soldier and a militant were killed and two security personnel injured on Tuesday in a gunfight between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district.

These encounters are taking place after security forces conducted cordon and search operations in the state, reports CNN-News18.

Officials said the militants could be foreigners.

Sources added that some of the militants managed to escape from the encounter.

SP Pani, Deputy Inspector General, south Kashmir, told The New Indian Express that the injured policeman has been hospitalised and his condition is said to be stable. This resulted in a "brief shootout" in which the militants were killed. "He was a militant of Hizbul Mujahideen", a police officer said here.

The slain militant, he said, was a B. Tech pass-out and was associated with Hizb.

Meanwhile, internet services were suspended across southern districts of Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam on Tuesday.

In Lam village of Tral, the encounter broke out after militants fired upon a search party of security forces.

According to a senior police official, in Pulwama, the encounter was triggered after holed-up terrorists fired at the security forces comprising the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group (SOG) of the state police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in Laam village near Tral town.

The search operation continued through the night and ended today after over twenty hours.
