Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo left Stamford Bridge after playing a key backroom role for a decade, but had some parting words of praise for Andreas Christensen, who is likely to face Ireland with Denmark on Saturday.

Having played as a defender for Nigeria as well as Notts County, Emenalo was also a close confidant of club owner Roman Abramovich.

The 52 year old, in a statement, said it has been a very hard decision to make, but one he believes is right for both himself, his family, and the club.

Head coach Antonio Conte's expressions of frustration at Chelsea's summer recruitment, plus some indifferent results, had led to speculation over his future but Conte and Emenalo had a good working relationship and the Italian said he was sorry to see him leave the club.

Conte won his first title with the Blues in his debut season, the club's second league title in three years.

The former Nigerian global, who joined Chelsea in 2007 and has been technical director since 2011, has already been linked with a position at Monaco.

This past summer, Chelsea lost out on several transfer targets including Romelu Lukaku.

The former Nigeria global first joined "The Blues" as opposition scout under manager Avram Grant and rose to become technical director.

Chelsea said Emenalo had "contributed to a period of unprecedented success for the first team and academy".

However, he has often been seen by some as at fault for transfer flops and the increasing amount of young players sent away on loan.
