The surprise announcement came alongside news that Electronic Arts was purchasing Respawn in a deal worth more than $400 million. For $151 million, plus more in long-term equity, Respawn Entertainment is now officially under EA's banner.

As part of the announcement, EA confirmed that the three previously-announced projects are still in the works at Respawn, which are a third-person Star Wars game being overseen by God of War III director Stig Asmussen, a new entry in the Titanfall series, and an Oculus Rift-exclusive VR game now scheduled for release in 2019. Now, in addition to partnering with Oculus on an unknown VR title, Respawn's success and close association with EA has enabled them to develop their own Star Wars game - but that's not the only thing that's coming out of their partnership with EA.

The acquisition gives EA all control over Respawn's output, with last year's Titanfall 2 struggling to meet its sales targets after it appeared to compete directly with the release of Battlefield 1 - a mistake we doubt will be repeated.

Respawn Entertainment was founded after Zampella and Jason West left Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward under murky circumstances. On the deal, he said 'While it wasn't necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense. "EA will provide us with more resources, access to new technologies, and expertise that we can tap into to that will help us make better games, and Respawn will retain the same creative freedom and culture we've always had". With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn't interfere with our process for making games or studio culture. "We've been talking closely with the leadership at EA and we share their values and vision for the future of being a developer-focused company that puts the players first". There will be no layoffs or major organization changes within Respawn.

The terms of the acquisition state that Respawn will now be a part of the EA Worldwide Studios division, alongside outfits like Motive Studios and Ghost Games.
