Bhubaneswar, Nov 14 The Odisha government said today it would soon seek a Geographical Indication tag for its version of rasagolla, hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the state had been granted the GI status for the popular sweet.
"It has been settled under the GI Act that authenticates a product relating to either a geographical location or community or society", said Deputy Controller of Patents and Designs, Sanjay Bhattacharya.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, now in London, called it a "sweet news". He was trying to come up with a new sweet for a number of years before he came up with it , As Reported By Hindustan Times. "We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI status for rosogolla".
The GI Registry named it as "Banglar Rasagolla" as sought by the West Bengal Government. West Bengal was involved in a lengthy battle with Odisha, which too had claimed Rasogolla as its invention. Both the states claimed ownership over its generation.
Food Processing Secretary Nandini Chakraborty was all smiles as she talked about how the state had filed a consolidated application by following the various steps for GI tag and then followed it up. It is believed that Naveen Chandra Das, the famous candies maker of Bengal, invented Rosgulla before the year 1868.
Veteran stage and screen personality Soumitra Chatterjee said: "Historically, it feels good to know officially that rosogolla was invented in Bengal".
However this is not the first sweet battle that Bengal has fought.
However, Odisha had claimed that 600 years ago they had Rosgulla.
The government termed West Bengal winning the GI tag on "rasagola" an "injustice to Odisha" as the sweet is rooted in Jagannath culture. We are all so happy.
It is believed that Chandra took his recipe with him to Kolkata, the BBC report said.
More importantly, the GI Registrar office at Chennai told The New Indian Express that Odisha has not so far applied for any GI tag.
