Kim's regime has ramped up its anti-US rhetoric ever since President Trump visited East Asia as part of a 12-day tour aimed at boosting trade and drumming up support for a solution to the North Korean crisis.

In a statement lashing out at Trump on Saturday, North Korea also referred to him as a "dotard", a word meaning a very old person, and one the reclusive nation has used on him in the past.

Trump has at times expressed impatience with that effort, but this week, he seemed to back away from "fire and fury", instead expressing hope for diplomacy.

One of Trump's tweets read: "Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old, ' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?' Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!"

"Might be a unusual thing to happen but it's certainly a possibility", Trump said during a press conference with Vietnam's president, adding that it would be "very, every nice if it did".

"That might be a unusual thing to happen but it's a possibility", he said. That might be a unusual thing that happens.

Trump also tweeted about what he said were the failures of the previous administration to improve relations with Russian Federation.

The United States would struggle to win if a war broke out with North Korea, as tensions over the country's nuclear ambitions continue to mount on the peninsula.

He said the US wouldn't threaten Kim if he gave up his nuclear weapons.

"Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face".

The comments are likely to go down extremely badly in Pyongyang, with North Korea extremely sensitive to any remarks - even if not meant to be taken seriously - that it sees as disrespectful to its rulers.

US Pacific Fleet commander Scott Swift said the triple-carrier drill was the first in the region since 2007.

Last month North Korea made threats to reduce the U.S. to "ashes and darkness" in response to sanctions imposed by the UN.

Following his "lunatic remarks" made in September, Trump "made his conceived attempt yet again to alienate our people from the government and keep up rivalry between the DPRK and the global society", the spokesman continued.

As the president took to social media, three USA aircraft carriers were taking part in a military exercise in the Western Pacific, in a show of strength aimed at North Korea.

In September Kim described Trump as a "mentally deranged USA dotard" whom he would tame with fire.

"And this artificial Democratic hit job gets in the way", Mr Trump said. "The world has been provoked". "We have been provoked".

He added that the world needs peace, not war.
